about

One never knows where a writing prompt will lead and this song reflects that more than any other I have written. I was at The 25th annual Lamb’s Retreat for Songwriters and John gave me a prompt about Michael Smith being "the draw." What started as a description of me drawing Michael's face from across the room became a simple journey through a perfect day in a small community along some ocean of dreaming. I feel immersed in it when I play it which is such a joy (not unlike "Follow That Road" or mindfulness practice). My hope is that you will enjoy being with me, then, there.

lyrics

a silhouette of the horizon, so soft in sleep, welcomes the sun
birds will start spreading their gossip, across the world, the day it is done
women wake making the morning, pull back their hair, dreams in their eyes
bake the bread, put on the coffee, each one a star beginning to rise

draw back the night, draw back the night, boats leaving home in the early light

now everywhere, people arriving, keys find the locks, open the doors
turn on the switch, light in the window, whistling a tune and crossing the floors
hello, hello so good to see you, the fish is fresh, corn meal is fine
try on the scarf, light as a feather, mustn’t forget your bottle of wine

draw back the night, draw back the night, boats dip and glide in glistening light

mid-day no wind, everything silent, shade disappears in the heat of the day
dogs stretch and yawn, everyone resting, troubles and time now slipping away
how sweet the wine, sweeter the berries, starry the sky, the moon's running late
tuck in the birds, pull up the blankets, soft whispers fade and questions will wait

draw back the night, draw back the night, boats safely home in the harbor light
