about

Anne writes: I was in my late twenties when I toured with with Tom Paxton and Bob Gibson (as The Best of Friends), and then in my later thirties with Priscilla Herdman and Cindy Mangsen ... but the very first folk trio I ever sang in was at Interlochen Arts Academy. Our trio included Lawrence Probes and Jerrold Pope and we even had a little tour in the Midwest. After we graduated, we all found different paths and Jerry became Dr. Jerrold L. Pope, a highly successful and sought after performer, mentor, professor, the founder and director of the Barga Opera Festival, with credits too numerous to cover here. He was always Jerry or Jer to me, as we met on and off over the years exchanging stories, laughter, good food and memories. Even his speaking voice was deep, rich and emotionally moving. His laugh was as free and resonant as his heart. Besides our little folk trio, Jerry and I were the soloists with the IAA Studio Orchestra and I can't listen to his 16-year-old version of "The Long and Winding Road" without tearing up. When he died unexpectedly in February of 2017, he left a large community of students, former students, fellow teachers and long-time friends to mourn. It was so sudden, like he'd caught a fast train to a faraway place before any of us had gotten to say farewell."

lyrics

Train blew by, didn't slow, barely time to let you go
Whistling down the river, as the stars began to fall
and a voice upon the water, memories call.

Trouble came, trouble went, money earned and money spent
Whistling down the river, as the stars began to fall
and a voice upon the water, memories call.

Yesterday's tomorrows have all come and gone
Spring to summer, autumn getting cold.
In between the springtime and the last day's dawn
We were surprised that we were growing old.

Little wing, little tree, travel far, remember me
Whistling down the river, as the stars begin to fall
and a voice upon the water, memories call.
